HUNG OUT TO DIE!
Of the 8,700 high street stores closed in the first 6 months of 2021, the most dramatic announcement was the closure of the 124 massive Debenhams department stores – after 200 years. A toxic economic cocktail of Covid and the shift to online shopping may account for some of these store closures and the 190,000 jobs lost but there is a far more worrying underlying factor, namely that our towns and cities are being allowed to die. Stores in retail parks have not suffered nearly as badly as those in our high streets, and now these mass closures are dragging 1,000s of small businesses surrounding them into the abyss – just like a black hole. So what are we going to do about it?
COUNCILS MUST ACT NOW
SAYS MINISTER!
Minister for retail UK and small business, Paul Scully (MP for or Sutton and Cheam) has called on all councils to step up and bring landlords, businesses and councils together to find a way to restore our high streets to their former glory. This is not about trying to save the past – it’s about rebuilding our communities for the future! Come on Mr Scully – show us what you’re really made of!
