HUNG OUT TO DIE!
Of the 8,700 high street stores closed in the first 6 monthsof 2021, the most dramatic announcement was the closureof the 124 massive Debenhams department stores – after200 years. A toxic economic cocktail of Covid and the shiftto online shopping may account for some of these storeclosures and the 190,000 jobs lost but there is a far moreworrying underlying factor, namely that our towns and citiesare being allowed to die. Stores in retail parks have notsuffered nearly as badly as those in our high streets. And now these mass closures are now dragging 1,000sof small businesses surrounding them into the abyss – just like a black hole.So what are we going to do about it?
